Belgorod is a capital of Belgorod region, Southern central European Russia, on the Northern Donets River. The populaton of the Belgorod city is 300,000.
Belgorod is a railway junction and one of the chief centres in Russia for the manufacture of cement and construction materials. These industries are based on nearby limestone deposits; the nearby iron deposits are part of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly.
Known since the 13th century, Belgorod was the centre of the Muscovite southern defence against Crimean Tatar attacks in the 17th century.
