About Artemovsk
Artemovsk is a city (1989 pop. 90,000), in Ukraine. An industrial center of the Donets Basin, it produces metals, mining equipment, glass, bricks, and chemicals. Nearby are salt and dolomite deposits that are utilized in the Donets iron and steel and chemical industries. Artemovsk originated in the 17th century as a fort protecting the Russian frontiers against the Crimean Tatars. Peter I the Great established a salt industry there in 1701, but seven years later the fort was destroyed in the Bulavin revolt. It officially became a town in 1783.
